So you found your dream car, found some money in your sock
drawer to pay for it, and it's everything you always hoped for. But
wait! Did you stop to think about whether it is properly insured? Uh
oh!
The first problem in getting good classic car insurance or
collector car insurance coverage
is that the regular insurers often "just don't get it" when it comes
to classic cars. And, even supposing that you can get them to understand
what you have, there will be more obstacles. Think about the following
items when you shop for classic car insurance:
Is the car "modified" under the policy? If so, what's covered?
What type of replacement parts does the insurance policy provide for?
What's the "real" value of the car, and how much will you get under
various stages of destruction?
Do you get to choose the repair shop if your classic car is injured?
How is a classic car covered during a restoration project?
Suppose you find the car of your dreams at the big car show and want to drive it
home. When can coverage be effective?
Will the insurer treat your classic car as a "regular" car if you decide to
drive it to work one day to show it off and something happens, rather than
having an accident on route to a show or parade?
Wow. That's a lot to think about. The good
news is that there are insurers who specialize in writing classic car insurance
policies. While we aren't in the business of recommending insurers, we
certainly recommend that you carefully compare your insurance options for your
classic car. The surprising part may be that the better policy from a
specialized classic car insurer is cheaper than the shoehorned policy that your
regular auto insurer can provide. Shop around!
